Where to Eat, Drink and Stay in Saltillo: The Ultimate Guide

Saltillo doesn’t have much of a travel internet presence, which is why I covered it comprehensively in my day trip guide! But what it lacks in tourist infrastructure it more than makes up for in places to eat, drink and stay. Northern Mexican food is its own thing – heavier, meatier, and very good – and you can experience some great options here. The craft beer scene is also quietly excellent for a city of this size.

Here’s where to go.

Where to Eat in Saltillo

Los Compadres Centro

This is THE one to visit if you have to pick. A taco haven in a courtyard, it was absolutely rammed with locals when I arrived. A queue out the door, street food energy, zero tourists. That is always the sign you want. The food is fast, cheap, and exactly what it should be. Get here earlier in the day or be prepared to wait.

Vibe: Street food in a courtyard. Locals only. Afternoon fun with friends.

Villa de Saltillo

A café-restaurant with a nice courtyard and a menu that skews heavily towards meat and hearty dishes. Given you’re in northern Mexico, this is super appropriate. Simple food, done well, pleasant atmosphere. Good option if you want somewhere to sit down properly rather than eat standing up. Nothing life-changing, but reliable and really close to the plaza de armas.

Vibe: Relaxed courtyard dining. Hearty meals. Families and friends. Good for lunch.

Dinoquesadillas

I need you to understand that this restaurant serves food shaped like dinosaurs. That’s the concept. The branding positions it as a family restaurant, but honestly the dinosaur-shaped quesadillas transcend age brackets. Go. Get the dinosaur food. Life is short.

Vibe: Chaotic family energy, dinosaur-shaped everything. No further explanation needed.

Tavola

A tiny coffee and cake spot about five minutes’ walk from the centre, Tavola does the kind of cinnamon rolls and baked goods that make you want to forget diet cutlure exists. Hit this mid-morning before you start your sightseeing, or use it as a recovery stop from stomping around town. Either way, don’t skip it.

Vibe: Flat whites. Sugary treats. Rest stop and catchup spot.

Where to Drink in Saltillo

Desert Brew Tap

A craft microbrewery, and by all accounts the best drinking spot in the city. Multiple taps, good range, proper beer bar energy. The catch: it only opens in the evening (and is closed Wednesdays), which meant I arrived in Saltillo too early to go and I am still not over it. If you’re staying overnight or timing your day right, make this a priority.

Hours: Evenings only, closed Wednesdays. Plan accordingly, learn from my mistakes.

Brujas Pub

Good beers, good cocktails, good atmosphere. A solid option if Desert Brew Tap is closed or you want somewhere with a broader drinks menu beyond beers. A lively spot and great place to spend an evening. Again – not open during the day, devastating if you’re heading back to Monterrey before dark.

Hours: Closed Mondays, evenings from 6pm.

Where to Stay in Saltillo

Gloria Maison

The best option in the centre. Boutique feel, good decor, nice wooden interior. The kind of place that actually has some character rather than just being functional. It’s pricey, but worth it. If you’re treating yourself or want somewhere with a bit of personality, this is the one.

Best for: Higher end, central location.

Hotel Urdiñola Saltillo

The best-looking of the more budget options. The others in this bracket are fairly basic, but this one has more going for it aesthetically if you’re watching the budget but still care where you sleep.

Best for: Budget travellers who have slightly higher standards.

Marriott Express

By the bus station, which is either convenient or uninspiring depending on how you look at it. You’ll be 20+ mins from the centre and anywhere decent to eat/drink, but great option if you have an early morning or middle of the night bus. Reliable in the way that Marriotts always are, without any of the local character the others have.

Best for: Early buses, brand loyalists, people who know exactly what they’re getting and want exactly that.
